The History of 886 Brew Co.
886 Brew Co. was started by a desire to spread West Coast craft beer throughout Taiwan. Having lived in Taiwan for almost 10 years before heading back for a few years later, with the plan to brew… Shawn Kidd, the head brewer for 886 Brew Co. decided that making craft beer in Taiwan was going to be his role in the craft beer industry.
Shawn started out his career in the service industry with years of experience in some of Vancouver’s top craft beer establishments. This lead to his interest in home-brewing, a hobby he pursued, and used to give him a greater comprehension of beer and the endless possibilities at his finger tips. After working extensively in the restaurant and hospitality industry back in Canada for a number of years, Shawn moved to Taiwan and opened a small niche craft beer bar, which focused on fusion cooking and a fridge filled with some big craft beer brands from California, which was before it’s time in the Taiwanese market in early 2004.
Returning to Vancouver in 2010, after 9 years in Taiwan, Shawn pursued more beer centric education, completing the cicerone preparation beer course at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, and attending numerous craft beer events, dinners and tasting seminars. He worked at Bitter Tasting Room – a craft beer focused restaurant and as a retail beer advisor at a specialty craft beer store, as well as organizing food and beer events around the city.
After completing the Intensive Brewing course at UC Davis, California, and the IBD sanctioned World Brewing Academy concise course in brewing technology with the Siebel Institute, Shawn decided to head back to Taiwan and see how the craft beer scene was developing. With a few goals in mind, after realizing a few hurdles in the industry, he figured the best way to start was launching an distribution company called BierWest Inc., and began his role in educating people about North American craft beer one sip at a time!
886 Brew Co. & Evil Twin Brewing
The import business allowed him to meet some amazing craft brewers from around the world, and began importing Evil Twin Brewing from Brooklyn NY. Around the same time, he launched 886 Brew Co. and in September 2014, 886 and Evil Twin collaborated on two beers and brewed them locally in Taiwan, establishing the Evil Twin Taiwan brand.
The first two beers brewed were the Made In Taiwan IPA and the Hipster 東區 (East Side), with the hopes of brewing Taiwan’s hoppiest IPA at the time.
Upcoming collaborations in 2017
886 Brew Co. is currently working on new 2 new exciting collaborations with Evil Twin Brewing (due to be released spring 2017) and a few other breweries that will also be released in 2016. As the beer industry quickly grows in Asia, 886 Brew Co. is excited to be a part of the craft beer movement.
